Performance (40% of the final score) – EVGA turned out to have a pretty well performing little unit here, didn’t they? First, efficiency. We were promised Gold but this one did Platinum. No deduction there. Ripple control was better than excellent, so no deduction there either. We had smooth enough scope shots in the power on spike tests to let that point stay around too, so no deduction there. Finally, voltage regulation. We had a 0.77% average in the hot box, which is a little bit short of the mark for mythic level, so a half point will need to go away there. That adds up to a 9.5.

Functionality (20% of the final score) – I can’t think of anything to deduct for in this category. We don’t expect fanless modes in this part of the market, nor do we need a bunch of over the top accessories. There are no in cable capacitors to complicate things, no Bergs to give power to the floppy drives we last saw in the nineties. Lots of connectors. Good documentation. Long warranty. 10.

Value (20% of the final score) – you’re looking at $119.99 at NewEgg for one of these. Unfortunately, that puts it head to head with the Seasonic Focus Plus Gold which is shallower in the housing and better regulating. However, this unit did give us higher efficiency than that unit. But the real puzzler is the fact that EVGA’s own G3 unit is also the same price and a unit much better able to compete with Seasonic. No way around it, though this is a really good unit, it’s not that competitive at this price. 7.

Build Quality (20% of the final score) – absolutely flawless, as is often the case for FSP’s better designs. 10.

SUMMARY

EVGA set out to bring us a new bargain minded really well performing 80 Plus Gold unit capable of continuing their domination of the power supply market. And they did all of those things… except make the unit a real bargain. Make no mistake, this is a fantastic unit. But it’s competing with other more fantastic units, including some of EVGA’s own. But if this puppy comes up twenty dollars cheaper, or the G3 or Focus Plus Gold is out of stock? Go nuts, power supply fans.

The GOOD:

  • amazing ripple control at this price point
  • fully modular
  • 10 year warranty
  • excellent build quality
  • excellent voltage stability

The BAD:

  • nothing

The MEDIOCRE:

  • competes price wise with even better performing units
