Performance (40% of the final score) – let’s start the scoring with efficiency today. This unit, being 80 Plus Bronze, was expected to hold to that level of efficiency throughout testing. And it did, so no point deductions from a perfect ten will happen there. I wish the same could be said for voltage stability, but with an average of 3.1% in the hot tests I have to remove a whole point for being two notches below excellent status. I also have to take a half point for the overshoot transient spike over spec on the 5V standby side of things. Finally, a further half point deduction will be made for the ripple on the 12V rail, which was very good but still not quite good enough. That gives this category an 8.

Functionality (20% of the final score) – being only semi-modular, I’m taking a half point right now for not being fully modular. That’s just how I roll. I’m doing the same thing for them using the ribbon cables on the ATX connector. That’s also how I roll. But that is not the only thing going against the cabling today, because you can plug most of these modular cables into the wrong connectors. One whole point comes off for that. And a half point deduction for the manual, which really could be better. I’ll stop there. Again, it’s nice to see no Berg connectors on the modular cables themselves, and off on their own adapter. More companies need to remember that. And well done, Rosewill, on that massive 14 gauge power cord. 7.5.

Value (20% of the final score) – being NewEgg’s house brand, this unit can be found there for $109.99 right now. Well… it could be if it were in stock. What do I say to that? Just get the Capstone 1000W. It’s only ten bucks more money, 80 Plus Gold, has a longer warranty, and performed a lot better for me. 6. Rosewill’s losing the fight against their own product, here.

Build Quality (20% of the final score) – I’ll begin with soldering. Not the best I ever saw, but not the worst either. Half a point will be removed. Secondary side capacitors are all Teapo… that’s a notch down from the good stuff, so half a point there too. Mustn’t forget the sleeve bearing fan, which requires another point removed. So, the score here will be 8.

HIVE 1000W – Scoring
Performance 8
Functionality 7.5
Value 6
Build Quality 8
Total Score 7.5

SUMMARY

The HIVE came flying into the lab today but didn’t quite start a buzz with me today. Some aspects of the unit were pure honey, like the ripple suppression on the minor rails, but others stung like… a… never mind. People, just buy the Capstone unit. This unit’s currently out of stock at NewEgg anyway. While this is not a terrible unit by any means, I just can’t see why Rosewill saw the need for it when they had a better product on hand for not that much more money.

The GOOD:

  • cheap
  • very good to excellent ripple suppression
  • huge power cord
  • semi-modular
  • handled temperatures higher than rated

The BAD:

  • effectively competes with a better Rosewill product

The MEDIOCRE:

  • so-so voltage stability due to connector issues
