Page 9 - PicoPSU Conclusions - Part 1

First up is the PicoPSU 120 getting it's power from the EDAC 102W power brick:

Efficiency: Efficiency was only just ok, never really moving away from 80%. For this, this combo gets a 7.

Voltage regulation: Once our EDAC 102W went through the PicoPSU, our +12V voltage dropped from 2.5% regulation to 3.5% regulation. Score here is a 6.5.

Ripple suppression: Ripple on the +3.3V and +5V look very good, so there's no reason to lower the score. +12V doesn't look any better, so there's no reason to raise the score any. The score here is 7.5.

Now for the PicoPSU 120 on the EDA 120W:

Efficiency: Efficiency was ok, but clearly there's some power loss happening at the PicoPSU. At least because the EDAC 120W had better efficiency to begin with, the efficiency at the other end of the PicoPSU is better than it was with the 102W power supply. Score here is 8.

Voltage regulation: It seems that the PicoPSU takes our decent voltage regulation and turns it into mediocre voltage regulation as our 1.6% drop on the +12V turned into a 3.4% drop. It is better than the combo with the 102W power brick and we squeezed out one more load test, so that's worth another point and a half here. I'm giving this an 8.

Ripple suppression: Again, ripple on the +3.3V and +5V is virtually non-existant. +12V is the same as it was before. The score here is 8.5.

Now for the PicoPSU 120-WI-25 on the EDA 102W:

Efficiency: Efficiency with this PicoPSU isn't really any better or worse than with the EDAC 102W power PicoPSU 120. Score here is only going to be 7.

Voltage regulation: Voltage dropped a significant 4% with this combination, almost dropping below ATX specifications. I'm giving this a 5.5.

Ripple suppression: Likely because of the 120-WI-25's capability to accept a wide range of input voltages, it can't just pass through the +12V's ripple. it seems that it manages to clean ripple up on ALL of the rails, including the +12V. The score here is 10.

Now for the PicoPSU 120-WI-25 on the EDA 120W:

Efficiency: Efficiency is only slightly better here because the EDAC 120W has proven to have better efficiency to begin with. Score here is only going to be 7.

Voltage regulation: Voltage dropped 4.4% and actually fell below ATX specifications as early as test 3. I'm giving this a 4.

Ripple suppression: For whatever reason, the 120-WI-25 didn't clean up the ripple from the power brick like it did with the 102W unit. The score here is 8.5.

Now let's see how the PicoPSU 120-WI-25 works with 19V input using the FSP power brick:

Efficiency: Efficiency is consistently over 80% thanks to the fact that the FSP power brick has fantastic efficiency to begin with. There's still quite a bit of power loss here, so I can't still give it a 10. Score here is only going to be 9.5.

Voltage regulation: The +12V only dropped .3%. +5V only dropped 1.2%. Fantastic and worth a score of 10.

Ripple suppression: Once again, there's no ripple on the +3.3V and +5V, but also the +12V is cleaned up significantly. Score here is a 10.

Wow! Two jonnyGURU Recommended's in one day! Once again, the FSP power brick shows that it's the best power brick... and I like what the PicoPSU 120-WI-25 can do with it.

True, we already gave the FSP 19V a jonnyGURU Recommended award, but if we've learned anything today, the way a PicoPSU works with one brick versus another can vary greatly. Therefore, I think it's a good idea to not only award the FSP 19V an award for being a great power brick, but also awarding it a jonnyGURU Recommended award for creating a great combination.

Now let's have a look at our final two PicoPSU's, the M3 and the PW-200-M.....
