Page 6 - Scoring the XFX - XTR 650 650W PSU

Performance (40% of the final score) - When it comes to scoring the performance side, we look at three areas: voltage regulation, ripple suppression, and efficiency. The voltage stability on this unit is almost as good as the little brothers sub 1%, but fell shy a little with 1.28% in the hot box. We are still in the excellent range so there is no deduction here. Overall, we did pretty well on the ripple suppression but the +5V rail coming in at 30mV keeps it from getting in that excellent range. I have to pull a half of point there. On the efficiency side, we might have walked on the line a few times, but we never crossed it, which means it's a pass in both hot and cold test. So there will be no deductions there. It seems we managed to hit 9.5 for a final performance score, which happens to be the same as little brothers score.

Functionality (20% of the final score) - The XTR 650 is a fully modular PSU, which means no deductions for having hard-wired cables. Looking at the cable / connector configuration for the XTR 650, we have what I think is a great combination. They even have the extra peripheral cable I was complaining about not having on the TS version. I'm also happy to see that the went with the flat cables excluding the main ATX 24 pin cable. This will make it a little easier, and give the user a cleaner look after installation. I think the Hybrid fan control paired with the 135mm FDB fan is an excellent addition to the XTR series, which allows the user to have some control over the cooling side of things. I'm not finding anything here to deduct... It's a 10!

Value (20% of the final score) - The XTR 650 can be picked up for 109.99 @ Amazon and NewEgg(when back in stock). After doing a quick check on NewEgg, we have several units going for the same price such as the Thermaltake Toughpower Grand, Antec Edge, and the Seasonic SSR650. We've got a few units below it like the Rosewill Photon @ 89.99, and the EVGA SuperNova GS @ 89.99. There are a few higher like the Thermaltake Toughpower DPS @ 135+ and the beQuiet Dark Power Pro 10 @ 179+. With this kind of competition, we find the XTR 650 on the lower half of the scale. I am going with a 7 here.

Build Quality (20% of the final score) - As we know with the TS 650, Seasonic has a solid performer in this platform. Thankfully, this time we didn't hear any rattling pins. I really can't think of any issues with the XFX XTR650 that warrants any point deductions. 10.

Summary

The XFX XTR 650 came in swinging for the fences. I know I did a lot of comparing to the little brother, TS 650. That is due to the fact that I just reviewed it a few weeks back, and it is based off the same Seasonic platform. Although we did have similar performance results, both units received deductions in the ripple suppression area. When it comes to functionality, the XTR brings everything I like to see. Full modular cable design. I think XTR 650 offers a good cable and connector selection for a 650W unit. Overall, it's a great looking PSU design, even though it might be a little heavy on the branding. It's sitting in the middle of the pricing scale which is a downfall, but it's fully modular design, cable / connector options, Hybrid fan control, and 135mm FDB fan all add a little value to in my opinion.

The Good:

  • Great voltage stability.
  • Good ripple suppression.
  • Fully modular cable design.
  • Hybrid Fan control.
  • 135mm FDB fan.
  • 5 Year Warranty.
  • 80+ Gold certified.
  • Japanese 105C rated capacitors.

The Bad:

  • Little heavy on the branding for my taste.

The Mediocre:

  • Pricing leaves it in the middle of the road.
