Performance (40% of the final score) - here comes the score. First, ripple control. This unit was just heavenly here, with super low ripple on all main rails well below what I need to see for excellent scoring. So, no points will come off there. Next, voltage regulation. Once again, this unit was better than excellent, with an average of 0.67% in the hot box, so no points will be deducted there either. The same goes for the efficiency, because this unit cleared Gold at all times. With no issues at all seen in any of the other tests, this unit is getting a perfect 10 here.
Functionality (20% of the final score) - this unit does nearly everything right. Cable lengths are fantastic, we have a switchable semi-fanless mode without any confusing labeling on the switch, the fan stays off for a good long time, we had lots of goodies in the box, the manual's decent, the unit is fully modular with a cable bag to stow the extra cables in... it's all terrific. Except... that CPU cable. I hate it. It's awkward, aesthetically terrible, and it really didn't need to be that way. One full point off for that. 9.
Value (20% of the final score) - EVGA's MSRP on this unit is $99.99. This will make it about $5 more money than the GS unit and $10 less money than the next cheapest alternatives, the Corsair RM650 and Thermaltake Toughpower Grand. Everything will either cost you a fair bit more money or come to your house not fully modular. Because the GS unit is cheaper, I can't really see my way to a perfect score here today. But I'll gladly do a 9.
Build Quality (20% of the final score) - everything was terrific here as well. I have no complaints about the circuit design, the soldering, the capacitors, or anything else. 10.
It certainly looks like EVGA has another winner on their hands with this one. The 650 GS was pretty darned good already, and this model is just that much better. Do you really need any more reasons to buy one at this point? If so, perhaps you should see a doctor because you may be clinically dead.
better than excellent ripple control
better than excellent voltage stability
semi-fanless mode switch
fantastic build quality
I can hear Seasonic's teeth gnashing from here
