Page 6 - Scoring

Performance (40% of the final score) - and we find ourselves on the scoring page once again. I only have a couple small deductions from a perfect score to make here. First, voltage regulation. It was very good, but not excellent, so a half point will come off for that. Second, I also have to remove half a point for the 3.3V ripple suppression that wasn't quite as good as the other two main rails. But there I stop. Efficiency was Gold indeed in both cold and hot tests, and ripple suppression on the 5V and 12V rails was excellent. This gives CoolerMaster a well deserved 9 in this category.

Functionality (20% of the final score) - as I usually do here, I'm going to pull half a point already for only being semi-modular. Yes, yes, I know. I'm going to burn in power supply reviewer's hell for having the opinion that only fully modular units should be found in my own computers. I will also remove half a point for the incomplete sleeving on the PCI-E cables. And there, I do believe I will stop. I could complain some more about the lack of zip ties, but the extremely shallow housing makes up for that. That's not even mentioning the fact that although this unit is rated to forty degrees with overtemp protection, it was fine with going a few degrees above that. Let's do another 9 here.

Value (20% of the final score) - $104.99 is what these are going for at Newegg right now. Not bad at all... most of the stuff below that number is either old, not Gold certified, or pure junk. Or a combination of the three. Seasonic does have an S12G there for five bucks less on sale, but I don't believe I've looked at that one directly and I don't think it's modular. You know, I'm going to give this category a 10. You need the Rosewill Capstone 750-M to compete with this one at Newegg, and it's more money.

Build Quality (20% of the final score) - nothing at all to complain about in this one. Capacitor selection is top notch, soldering and boardwork was flawless, and Enhance even managed to control themselves with the glue gun this time. 10.

Summary

CoolerMaster's V750/VS750/VSM750, or whatever it's really called, is quite the decent little unit. Is it the best performing thing on the market? No, but it's good enough at being a fantastic value that it doesn't need to be. Build quality was excellent, and you just can't argue with the price. Add to that some desirable features like being only 140mm deep, and this unit should do pretty well for CoolerMaster at the cash register. No, it's not fully modular, but this one might be hanging around my house for a while after this review goes up.

The Good:

  • shallow depth
  • excellent build quality
  • very good voltage regulation
  • excellent ripple suppression on the 12V rail

The Bad:

  • nothing

The Mediocre:

  • name leads to confusion with the slightly better quality Seasonic built models
