Page 6 - Scoring

Performance (40% of the final score) - scoring time again, isn't it? And like most of the reviews I do on a Seasonic unit, this will be extremely easy. First, voltage regulation. 1.1% average, both cold and hot. That's excellent, so no points come off a perfect score. Passed Gold efficiency both times, also excellent, no points come off. Finally, the ripple control. Again, excellent. On all three rails, despite the squiggly weirdness on the 5V rail. Surprise, surprise, surprise, Seasonic gets a 10 here. Honestly, I'd be far more shocked if one of the units from this company managed anything other than 10 at this point.

Functionality (20% of the final score) - only semi modular, so that's a half point deduction right off the top. Only fully modular units get away with no deduction. To this, I have to remove another half point for the half baked user guide. Installation instructions are all well and good, but there's nothing in there that gives me any specs on the unit in question. Borderline useless for me... I mean, I already know how to install a power supply. It's not rocket surgery or brain science. Cabling? We're all good there, though. We have a set of hardwired cables that make sense, and we have varying lengths in the modular cables to make management easier. That extra CPU cable is a little bit of a head scratcher, but not one I'll remove points for. I could dock points for not color coding the modular connectors, but really I think that's best left as a strong suggestion than something needing scoring against. Some folks would like it, some would rather keep the colors low key and just grab a flashlight if they can't see the connectors. Sleeving is well done, the unit comes with a good amount of extra goodies, the power cord is actually overkill for a unit this size... can't do any more complaining at all. 9.

Value (20% of the final score) - $104.99 is the magic price at Newegg for this unit. That's actually really competitive... I don't see many other Gold units around that size for that money. Rosewill is the only one doing it with their Capstone 650. I'd say I have good grounds to give Seasonic this 10 I'm dropping on them again.

Build Quality (20% of the final score) - even though I had a MOSFET leg pull right off, I can't bag on Seasonic for that. Since everything I complained about with the G-550 has been improved on, yeah. I think I have to do another 10.

Summary

It's really getting to the point now where anything with the Seasonic name on it is worth buying, isn't it? Are we surprised at all by this unit's fantastic performance here today? This unit is awesome. The price is right, it's as insanely stable with the voltages as you would expect from one of Seasonic's better units, it has no trouble meeting its Gold efficiency at all, and even with some weirdness going on in the scope it still brought its A game to the score. There's nothing more needing to be said. Seasonic is completely running away with the whole consumer power supply industry right now.

The Good:

  • voltage regulation
  • ripple suppression
  • build quality
  • efficiency passed Gold both times
  • affordable
  • semi-modular

The Bad:

  • you can do better than this for a user guide, Seasonic

The Mediocre:

  • not... one... single... thing
