Page 6 - Scoring

Performance (40% of the final score) - I score performance on three fronts: efficiency, voltage regulation, and ripple control. This unit happens to be fantastic in all three areas. Efficiency was a pass for Gold both times, so no deductions will be made from a perfect score there. Voltage regulation was also excellent, doing 1.2% averaged in the hot box. Finally, ripple control was also excellent, with no one rail doing any worse than 25mV. What does that mean? It means a perfect score, of course. 10.

Functionality (20% of the final score) - modularity is always the first thing I look for, and the first thing I make deductions on here. But, this unit is fully modular, so no deductions will be made there. The same cannot be said about the cable lengths on those PCI-E cables - I'm going to remove half a point for that. I just think those cables are a little too long for most cases, requiring the user to do a lot of cable hiding back behind mainboard trays. I'm also going to remove half a point for the user guide. I won't do a full point deduction, because at least there is a manual, but I feel there could have been more to it. But, I'm going to stop there. I like everything else about this unit, and full modularity really makes up for the cables being on the long side. 9.

Value (20% of the final score) - Newegg's current price on this unit is $199.99 before rebates. That's... a little on the high side, actually, when you consider that the Coolermaster V1000 is ten dollars cheaper. Is a ten year warranty enough to make up for that when the Coolermaster is also an amazing unit in its own right, and comes in a smaller package? Only you can really be the judge of that. Meantime, I'll do an 8.5 here I think. It's a good value, but not a great one. As long as there's a ten dollar rebate it makes more sense to go with this one, but I cannot score on rebates so I'll stick to my guns on this part of the score.

Build Quality (20% of the final score) - the only deduction I can see making here is the half point for finding the second tier Chinese capacitors on the modular board again. Nothing else merits any deductions. 9.5.

Summary

EVGA's second ever submission to this site just happens to be absolutely fantastic. The Supernova G2 1000 watt unit is stable, it's low on ripple, and it's plenty efficient. Just like the box said it was. And it's affordable, too. Folks, don't worry about the bragging rights the NEX1500 would give you... this right here is the EVGA unit to own, and I am really looking forward to taking a look at big brother 1300W before too long. If that unit is as good as this one is... look out, competition.

The Good:

  • excellent ripple control
  • excellent voltage stability
  • affordable
  • fully modular
  • nice looking
  • 10 year warranty

The Bad:

  • nothing, really

The Mediocre:

  • some cable length issues
