Page 5 - Scoring

Performance (40% of the final score) - let's boil this down until the water's all gone. We'll start with the voltage regulation. On this unit, it was simply excellent, though it was a notch below the big Seasonic Platinum. That said, we really can't hold that against it, because I haven't seen anything really come close to that design in regulation. But, fair is fair and this unit did slide below that 1% number on average. Half a point removed. This unit handily passed Platinum efficiency, so no points removed there. Ripple suppression? Considerably better than the Seasonics, and that's really saying something. Normally, I reserve a zero point deduction for units that stay under 25mV on the 12V rail with the minor rails at half spec or better. But you know what? This thing only missed that mark by about five millivolts at most. I'm not going to nitpick over that when I already came down on it for slipping below 1% on the regulation by a measly 0.1%. No points off. So, this unit gets a performance score of 9.5.

Functionality (20% of the final score) - what we have here is not a fully modular unit, it is only semi-modular. Since I've decided to get a little more demanding about modularity, this counts for a half point deduction. A further half point will come off for the extra hardwired EPS12V. I really want to see that on the modular connectors. And the manual could stand improving, but not much. Other than that, I can't really fault this unit on anything else. Lots of connectors on the modular cables, the ability to run three way video cards, and that switchable semi-fanless mode are all perks on this unit. I do believe I'd like to see all the modular cables in the flat ribbon style, and not this mishmash of flat and sleeved wires, but that's hardly worth taking points off for. So, I'll stop at 9.

Value (20% of the final score) - $229.99 at Newegg. Hot damn, Kingwin came in and kicked Seasonic's and XFX' legs out from under them. Time to whip out a 10.

Build Quality (20% of the final score) - one point will come off for the soldering. Superflower is just not currently a market leader in this area, probably due to the cost of the equipment used to come up with something even as good as Seasonic uses... never mind Delta. The point deductions stop there, though. 9.

Summary

Matching the total score of last week's Enermax review is the Kingwin LZP-1000. This right here is a very solid, very well behaved unit that just so happens to carry 80 Plus Platinum certification with it. It is currently cheaper than the Seasonic units it's in direct competition with, and is only really lacking in comparison with those units on voltage regulation. And even that isn't lagging by much. Kingwin just has an excellent unit here - go buy one.

The Good:

  • Platinum efficiency
  • 30mV or less 12V ripple
  • excellent voltage stability
  • semi-fanless mode can be defeated if desired
  • cheaper than the competition

The Bad:

  • build quality is a notch below the best, but only a small notch

The Mediocre:

  • I'm not going to hear the end of the 2012 apocalypse nonsense until January 1, 2013, am I? The TSA isn't going away, is it? Verizon is going to find another way to tack that $2 charge on, aren't they? The RIAA and MPAA are going to get SOPA passed one of these days, aren't they? Sigh...
