Performance (40% of the final score) - like its semi-fanless cousins, the Golden Silent unit is quite the exceptional performer. Even without a fan, it regulates like Chuck Norris, controls ripple like Chuck Norris, and is roughly as efficient at doing its job as Chuck Norris. And just like the bearded one, you can't hear it coming. Now, I do have to nitpick on a couple things. The fanless design did compromise one performance aspect, namely the voltage regulation in the hot box. That's only good for a half point off a perfect score, says I. 9.5.
Functionality (20% of the final score) - now, what am I supposed to say against the unit here? Modular cables are always good, and I like the ones this unit came with. We get a chain of Molexes, a chain of SATAs, and one combo chain with both Molexes and SATAs. I like that. Enough connectors for two video cards. I like that, too. And the hardwired cables all make sense... there aren't any unnecessary cables to hide. I have nothing to roundhouse kick, here. 10.
Value (25% of the final score) - Superflower units are not available under their own name in North America, so I'm currently wandering the virtual aisles of Zol.com.cn where this unit is listed for ￥1199. That's about a hundred and eighty-five smackers, in US dollars. Expensive, for a 500W unit. But seriously... what's the competition in 80 Plus Platinum fanless units? Slim to none, and slim just got roundhouse kicked out of the building by a guy in a beard singing a really out of tune country theme song. That said, the price is a little too high for my tastes. You can get a Seasonic X-660 cheaper at that same place. Not a lot cheaper, mind you, but still... I think I'll do an 8 here.
Build Quality (15% of the final score) - Superflower doesn't have a lot going against it here. Component selection is top notch, the design is excellent, and the soldering is very good if not excellent. That said... there was no MOV I could find. One point off. One more point off for soldering quality due to some leads being left too long. 8.
Superflower continues its winning streak with the fanless Golden Silent 500 watt unit. Like its fanned cousins, it's an exceptionally good unit that takes an already fantastic platform and takes it to the next logical place - fanlessness. If you need something powerful, stable, efficient and utterly noise-less I don't see what competition this unit has. Superflower. Winning.
excellent voltage stability
a little pricey
not available in North America
I'm not Chuck Norris
