Good morning folks. Are you ready for another power supply review? I know I am. At least, I think I am. Got my caffeine right here, got my crazy hat on... yep, I'm ready.
Today's review unit is the brand new Cougar CMX 850 watt unit, version three. I'd like to tell you all about how it compares to versions one and two, but it looks like I never got to check those units out. So, we'll have to look at this 80 Plus Bronze unit on its own merits.
And right away, we're starting with some marketing. It's a little hard to see in the above picture, even in the large size, so I'll reprint it for you here:
extremely high efficiency 80 PlusŪ Bronze certified, up to 88% of efficiency -we'll see in the load testing how efficient this unit is
ultra quiet & temperature controlled 140mm ball-bearing fan
compatible with the latest PC technology
support multi-GPU technology
highest durable & reliable Japanese main capacitor -but what about the other capacitors?
high performance at 40°C
advanced modular cable
compliant with ErP Lot6 2013 Energy consumption in standby < 0.3W
supports the energy star 5.0
full protections with OCP, SCP, OVP, UVP, OPP
Oh boy! More marketing! This time, I won't reprint all of it. It's pretty much just a repeat of everything on the front, in a little more detail.
We do see a little blurb on here talking about "Japanese capacitors," plural, so I'm hoping that means more than one or two was used. We'll find out for sure later on.
For now, let's skip the rest of the box pictures, which don't have anything of interest printed on them anyway, and get to the unpacking.
I see a user guide, some zip ties, a few screws, a power cord, some modular cables, and a power supply in a cloth bag.
One page of the user guide...
And the other page. It's not too bad as far as user guides go, but it is missing a few details. Once again, it tells us to note the de-rating curve in "point 2," but never actually gets around to showing us what that is. I've come to accept this as normal for Cougar, but I'm still going to score against it later.
The box told us we'd be getting an orange power supply. I have to say, it doesn't quite look that orange to me... it's more of a reddish orange.
Whatever it is, I like it.
