As you can see above, Superflower has sent me their brand new fanless take on the 80 Plus Platinum efficiency level. More than likely based on the same platform used by the Golden King 550W and Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W, which were semi-fanless units themselves, this unit promises fantastic performance without making a lot of racket in doing so.
Why look, another "overclock version" graphic. Sigh... even if I did get all excited about running power supplies past their ratings, I'm even less excited about taking a fanless unit to "overclock" it. Why? Because fanless units need cooling in other ways. You're more likely to successfully overclock it if it's cooled well in other ways. But you and I both know at least one guy who will want to do it in a fanless case next to a heating vent.
As is often the case, the marketing has some bullet points to talk about. Let me see if I can list them for you:
Fit in with Energy Star standards/EuP(Energy-using Products) instructions: energy consumption during shut-off status less than 1W. -I assume they mean with the unit not loaded. Put a load on the 5VSB rail, and you're not staying below 1 watt for long.
Support all Intel and AMD Multi-Core CPU and its compatible Motherboards, ATX/BTX compliant.
Compliance with ATX 12V v2.2, EPS 12V v2.91 and SSI EPS 12V v2.92 Specification.

There are other marketing points on here under the specification header, but this is all pretty much standard stuff for power supplies. Supports CPUs. Whoopety doo. It's black. Yeah, I saw in the picture on this side of the box. Is efficient enough to pass Platinum. Tell me something I don't know.
Ew... sir, I didn't mean that literally. It's going to take years to get that image out of my head now. I don't even want to think about what you had that plumbing snake there for.
There are other things bragged about on this side of the box, under the Interior Material Used header. Like Infineon MOSFETs, Cree diodes, and Nippon Chemi-Con capacitors. All good things to have in power supplies.
It is time to unpack our fanless wonder now.
As is often the case, I found some other stuff in the box besides a power supply. This includes a power cord, bag of modular cables, some screws, and a user guide.
The user guide appears to have been ripped out of the Golden King user guide stockpile, because it tells you all about the fan curve this unit doesn't have.
Here's the unit itself, complete with a massive black aluminum heatsink that covers the entire top of the unit. Or... bottom, as the case may be. But really though... this is a fanless unit. I'd mount this heatsink facing up, to aid in convective cooling. Too bad the wires exit on the wrong side for good cable management when it's mounted that way.
Heat rises, people. If you mount this thing heatsink down, and there's no airflow in your case (not advisable anyway for fanless units), this thing will be stewing in its own heat. Granted, Platinum efficiency won't give you that much heat, but even so... yeah, I'd want that heatsink facing up for peace of mind. Cool electronics are happy electronics. Can't you see the smile on the face of this capacitor I'm holding up, here?
Another angle on the power supply. Superflower has thrown in some silicone covers for the modular cable connectors, always a nice touch.
A look from straight on at the back panel. It looks like both primary and secondary heatsinks go all the way up to the heatsink, as they should in a fanless design.
Both sides are open to ventilation.

Since the Golden King used the VRM approach to derive the minor voltages, it's no surprise to see that this unit also boasts the ability to run almost the full capacity of the unit on the 12V rail alone.

And yes, Virginia, this unit really is rated to fifty degrees. I'll heat it up real good like in the hot box later and see how well it does.
