Around here, real gold doesn't grow on trees. That's how come I'm still renting the basement at my folks' place and not tooling around in a Jag on my way back to the old mansion with lots of meat for the barbecue me and my writer friends should be throwing this evening. But fortunately, I've been given a steady supply of another sort of gold - the 80 Plus variety to be exact.
Today's victim of load testing torture is the Seasonic X-760. It's an updated version of the X-750 I took a look at almost a year ago, and related to the X-560 I examined much more recently. I must admit, the advent of 80 Plus Platinum units like the Kingwin LZP-550 have taken some of the wind out of Seasonic's sails for yours truly, but the fact is - the X series units have been quite outstanding. Let's find out if they still are.
As is customary, the product packaging has lots of marketing fluff on it. And lucky me, it's too small in the picture for you to read. So, here you go:
Seasonic Patented DC Connector Panel with Integrated Voltage Regulation Module* Seasonic patented full modular design minimizes voltage drops and impedance and maximizes efficiency and cooling and enhances overall performance and reliability. -And contributes and adds and helps with and realizes and allows and brings to the table and facilitates the adoption of run on sentences and unnecessary uses of the word "and" and other such conjunctions on product packaging and other related marketing and product information sheets. See, random Seasonic marketing person? I can out-and you. Don't mess with us writers. Benefits
Minimizes line resistance and voltage drops to maximize efficiency.
Reduces overall component count to better space utilization for optimal airflow, heat dissipation and cooling.
Extensive use of SMD technology for overall quality and reliability improvement.
Simple and ingenious design for a "clean" layout to achieve unsurpassed quality and performance.
High Current Gold Plated Terminals Reduces current transmission resistance for increased efficiency.
High Reliability 105°C Grade A Capacitors Built with top level Japan sourced components which translates to extended product life.
Multi-GPU Technologies Supported 6Pin & 8Pin PCI-E connectors to support all GPU platforms.

80 PLUS® GOLD Certified 80 PLIS® GOLD certification in combination with our corporate slogan "Green Innovation Powers Your Life", defines Sea Sonic's commitment to the design and production of the most eco-friendly power supplies on the market today with the X series as the market leader.
Seasonic Hybrid Silent Fan Control * An industry first, advanced 3 phased thermal control balances between silence and cooling. The Hybrid Silent Fan Control provides 3 operational stages: Fanless, Silent, and Cooling mode.
San yo Denki - San Ace Silent Fan The world renowned Sanyo Denki ball bearing fans are made of the highest quality components to ensure maximum quality and performance. The use of spoon shaped high-density plastic fan blades with smoothed leading edges, strict tolerance ball bearings and precision copper axel are just some features to ensure ultra low noise performance and quality. In addition, the fan uses 3 balancing points, instead of the industry standard of 2 points, to ensure perfect balance and rotation. The Sanyo Denki fan is a perfect match to the class leading Sea Sonic Hybrid Silent Fan control for the absolute top performance of the industry. -Copper axel? Axel F! Heh heh hehheh heh hehheh heh. Heh hehheh hehheh heh heh. Heh heh heh hehheh heh and then another heh heh hehheh heh. Benefits
Reduces noise without increase in temperature.
Extends fan life by eliminating unnecessary rotation.
As with all boxes, this one has more than one side. Here's another one of those now, which features a table with the connector count. Also present is a list of the included protection features, as well as a load table.
Green innovation powers your life, says the company slogan on this side of the box. You know what? I don't like that word - slogan. It's clumsy and awkward. I prefer "motto." Much more fun to say. Or "credo," if you want to go more latin-ey. Go ahead, find a mirror and say the word "motto" while wiggling your eyebrows up and down. No way can you do that and not laugh.
This side of the box features all the marketing goodness in languages other than English.
Time to open the box and do some unpacking. I like all the foam in there - lots of protection for the unit inside.
A warranty flyer, a user guide, an X Series sticker, a case badge, some zip ties, some velcro ties, some screws, a modular cable bag full of modular cables, a power cord, a power supply, and a bag for the power supply were all found in the box.
Here's the warranty flyer, telling us all about the unit's five year warranty.
Here's the user guide, telling us all about the marketing we already read on the box.
Here's the bag with the cable ties and screws and stuff.
As always, the Seasonic X Series units are good looking units. I have nothing to complain about here.
Another angle for you, showing the fully modular front panel of the unit.
The exhaust grille is nice and open. There's lots of room for airflow, not that a Gold unit needs a whole lot of that.
Go for Gold! Ok, mister power supply, I'll just call up that Dollars for Gold guy and see if I can work out a trade. This power supply for the equivalent weight in gold. That's fair, isn't it? I'm glad you readers agree.
A look down at the 120mm fan. I see lots of spoon shaped fan blades, but I don't see any blue ticks waving them around.
And now, the label. It looks like this unit can do all but four of its total rated watts of power on the 12V rail alone. We already know this unit uses the VRM approach to the minor rails, so this comes as no surprise to me.
A better look at the modular connector panel comes next. This unit keeps with the same split modular cable for the ATX connector, I see. This one will end up being hard to plug in, but let's be reasonable... how often will we need to remove it once installed?
Finally, we get to see the modular cables, and there are a few of them. There is one SATA chain and one Molex chain shorter than the others, for those that only have a couple devices at most that need them. I've listed them separately in the below table.
Type of connector:
ATX connector (580mm)
8 pin EPS12V (640mm)
4+4 pin EPS12V/ATX12V connector (650mm)
6+2 pin PCIe (600mm)
5.25" Drive (550mm+155mm+155mm)
5.25" Drive (355mm+155mm)
5.25" - dual 3.5" adaptor (150mm)
Unit Dimensions(L x W x H)
160mm x 150mm x 86mm
