Default Samsung Spinpoint MT2 1TB... What's the catch?

So late last year, Samsung released the MT2 1TB drive.

Why is it so cheap?

I had my eye on a WD Black 750GB. I've come to really like the WD Black drives because they are noticably faster than your typical 5200 RPM drive. The MT2 claims to be faster than other dirves... but I imagine they're talking about other 5200 RPM drives because there's is a 5400 RPM drive?

I Googled for some benchmarks, but couldn't find anyone that had reviewed the drive. Rather bummed out. I'm wondering if I should pull the trigger already or just get the Black 750GB I had my eye on (which coincidently, costs $10 more!)

Cheap?

The F3 1TB is $65.

And I do think they mean it's faster than other 5400RPM drives, I don't see this keeping up with the 7200RPM ones.

LE: Do you mean WD Scorpio Black?

Apparently the MT2 is too tall to fit inside most notebooks.

Yes. Scorpio Black.

F3 is a 5.25" drive.

But thanks for noting the height of the MT2. I'll need to see if it will work for me.

Well, given that the drive that's in the laptop now is a 9.5mm and it looks like there's ZERO clearance for anything taller, I'm going to assume that I can't use the MT2.

FWIW - Western Digital drives have higher operating temp specs than Samsung. At least, on all the ones I've looked at.

That's good too. Don't want to cram a larger drive in a smaller space and expect it to run any cooler.

F3's are 3.5" Drives

MT2 is cheap because it's 12.5mm tall, so most laptops can't use it.

Other than that; it's also cheap because it's a 5400 RPM drive.

That's on the Black, Raptor, & Enterprise drives.

Green & Blue drives (what most people get) are rated the same as Samsung's.

There is no difference in regards to rated temps on mobile drives.

0-60*C operating for WD's, along with Samsung's.

WD Blue's are only rated up to 65*C Non-operating condition. WD Blacks & Sammy's are 70*C
