1. lifetime warranty
2. ripple suppression
3. efficiency

my 3 cents
ES is better on 12V ripple suppression

TX850 is much better on 3.3V ripple suppression.

Default Anything on the motherboard that doesn't warrant a PWM...

Any circuitry that doesn't require its own PWM regulator. Some circuitry (such as super-I/O chips and on-board peripherals) runs off it directly, and other circuitry uses it to supply a linear regulator that provides whatever voltage is required.

You might remember motherboard jumpers used to overvolt DDR1 DRAM. Normally, the DRAM was supplied with +2.5V generated by linearly regulating the +3.3V line, but if you wanted to go much above that, you had to move the jumpers to connect the regulators to the +5V supply instead.

It's generally low-powered stuff, but there is a fair variety.

I was truly impressed by its 15mV maximum ripple on the 12V no matter what you loaded with & the fact tt is quiet, truly quiet. The fact tt Jonny Guru designed this unit was not important in the decision to aquire it, but decisive.

True. I am not an engineer... but I know what I like and I know sometimes you have to sacrafice BOM cost and lead times to get the product you want.
