Corsair TX850 Review

Last review before Christmas

Once upon a time, a small company known for memory decided to follow in the footsteps of another company known for memory and start producing power supplies. In the months and years since then, Corsair has gone on to be one of the most highly regarded companies out there when it comes to releasing good quality units at a good price.

Today, I'm looking at the brand new TX850, an 850W unit with a single whopping 70A 12V rail and four 8 pin PCI-E connectors to go with it. Will this bad boy continue to bring the goods for Corsair, or come up short? Let's find out.

Value (30% of the final score) - with a projected MSRP of $149.99 and an estimated street price of $129.99, the TX850 continues the trend from Corsair to price just about everyone else out of the game. Not only is it cheaper than units like the also very capable Silverstone DA850, only the impressive BFG ES-800 really gives it a run for its money these days. 10.

Yeah looks like a good performer...I would have prefered a Red or Purple badge though...

A nice revised PSH, if only the ripple on +12V is reduced to <40mV... Maybe I want to much from our old PSH.
What about the fan speed or fan noise?

I don't quite understand the algorithm here.

First, there are no less than six parallel STPS3045CT's to handle the 12V rail. Assuming a 60% duty cycle that adds up to about 72A of theoretical capacity. Just enough. Then, there are two STPS6045CW Schottky's for each of the 3.3V and 5V. 36A each, if I go by the 60% figure again.

How's the ES-800 review going now?

Here is a question for Redbeard. I noticed on Corsair's site that the HX450 has a 7 year warranty, yet all the other Enthusiast series PSUs only have a 5 year warranty. Why is that?

Also what are the prospects of a modular supply between 620W and 1000W?

It's not. Lost two samples in a row in the hot box, and I'm still not sure what I want to do with it. Might wait for the next revision. I'm planning on doing the revised Enhance based LS series before I do anything more with the ES review.

As for the duty cycle thing, I'm learning more stuff from Gabe Torres' work.

Edit - decided to take that out for now until I study that some more.
