Default Is 650 watt overkill? Should I go for the 550?

Building a new computer. I plan on overclocking it, and maybe adding another couple of hard drives in the future. Is the SeaSonic 650W overkill. Reliability and stability is what I value most in a computer.

I plan on buying a UPS too when I build this one.

If that's all it's going to power, you're safe with a 450/500/550 W model.

What's overkill?

There's no such thing as overkill with a power supply unless you're trying to find a place to save some money.

But mp666 is mostly correct. Even a GOOD 500W will work.

Well, I love overkill.

But, for some reason I seem to remember reading somewhere that it was better to use a power supply in its sweet spot, as opposed to too much overkill.

I guess my question is, is the 650 TOO much overkill.

What would you reccommend?

Go for Corsair VX550 or Enermax Pro82+/Modu82+ 525. Both are more than enough for your setup.

Cool, thanks for your help guys.

Another question, and please forgive my ignorance, but is there anywhere on this site that tells how to look at your system and rate each component in order to find out what wattage you need?

Would it be possible to have like a leaderboard that shows the top reccommended power supply based on a wattage range, like 380-400, 400-500, 500-600, 600+.

Or, what about a form that you plug your system into and it spits out the reccommended size.

Let's say that your configuration in games at stock speeds will need under 200W DC. With a decent overclock (both CPU and GPU) around 250W DC.
Now start calculate yourself your overkill limit.

And for a site which will tell you power requirements on components try this, but try it with a grain of salt.

I would go for Corsair VX 550W or Corsair HX 520.
