Default Dead PSU?

Hi all,

I went away for a few days and turned the computer of normaly, then removed the socket from the wall..
Got back yesterday, pluged it in and its dead!! there is a flickering green light(at the back)under the power supply cable but no other sign of power anywhere...theres also a continuous clicking noise that seems to be coming from the power supply unit.

Today i had all but the 20 pin connector attached to the M/B,i shorted the green and grnd wires and there was power-the psu fan was running-the 2 drives working-the HD spun. (case fan and pcu fan not working)

i used a multimeter to test the psu with(green and black wire shorted)
and got these results.

red-4.98
orange-3.36
yellow-12.02
purple-5.02

does it look ok?

thx

Looks good, except for where you left hardware components connected to a suspected defective PSU while jump starting it

What PSU is this?

You had hard drives attached to a PSU that wouldn't power up without jump starting... if the PSU had been fried on the secondary, you would have lost those hard drives.

Just rereading your post - you say the PSU fan isn't working? That right there is grounds for replacing or RMAing it. The clicking could be the fan hitting something, or a symptom of the PSU having overheated from not having a working fan.

I thought i needed some sort of load to get a good read...

The CPU fan and case fan are NOT working.

The power supply fan is working.

Only once you can tell the unit is definitely working first.

Sounds like short protection was kicking in - the problem is outside the PSU.

If you have a spare mobo you wouldn't mind frying (i.e. the one in the closet you havn't used in three years) give it a try. You can short the mobo on without a power switch by using a penny or a flat headed screwdriver for the two pins on the mobo the power switch wires in to.
