ultra x3 1000 watt 12V-

hey guys. i had a quick question i was hoping you guys could help me with. i have just purchased an ultra x3 1000 watt. I have this psu tester from frozen cpu. http://www.frozencpu.com/products/40...ppy_4_pin.html

so i plug in the 24 pin connector (yes i have the psu side in the psu and the mobo in the tester) and these are the readings i am getting

+5v - 5.1
+12V1 - 12.2
+3.3V - 3.3
-12V - 10.4 ( this is blinking ) not sure why this is happening
+12V2 - LL -
5VSB - 5.2
PG - 210ms

I believe the LL is just bc i dont have another connector in there and its not detecting the 2nd rail. When i plug in a pcie connector it pops on around 12.2

So my big question is should i RMA this? Any possible ideas why the 12v- stays at 10.4? Ty for all the help. I am pretty new at this computer building and this is stressing me out


edit:: i forgot to mention, i tested another 2 other psus and the 12v- is definitely working, its definitely not the tester. also i noticed on the motherboard side of the atx connector there are only 23 pins and wires instead of 24, is that normal?

I have that tester. Did you bother to read the instructions, because the instructions say that you must connect a 4P or 6P or 8P connector (don't use an 8 pin PEG PCI Express though!!!) BEFORE powering on. This will change that LL to some value unless your supply is way out of spec.

Ignore the -12, negative voltages are often reported wrong greatly because they either don't even exist (not wired) or they just read off. Not much uses the negative Vs today. It is blinking because it is indicating that voltage is out of spec or not present. I forget if it is on the connector or not, maybe the guys can go into this one for us.

Otherwise, all looks grand, but remember, that tester does not test under load, so it won't indicate all failure modes...

Thank you for the reply. I did read the directions. When i plugged in both the 24 pin and the 6 pin (the manual suggested this) the 12v2 did pop up within spec. Thank you for clearing up the 12v-, i didnt realize that it was not important. Thank you.

The -12V typically only shows voltage within spec if there's a load on it. That's because the regulation is done with very simple circuitry and, quite frankly, if there's no load for the voltage to go to, it may not, or barely, deliver any voltage at all.
