Default Melting 8 pin connectors on my 1500W PSU - WTF?!?

Hey!


I've been cryptomining a little on the side with an R9 290x and an R9 390.

I'm using a SilverStone ST 1500 Strider (the 80+ Silver one) in my rig, so I believe I should have ample power as this guy is rated at 25A per 12V rail, which it has four of! Would you believe it?

So, what's happening is that after mining for a while, suddenly it would begin to smell. This is the plastic at the 8 pin connector on the PSU side that's melting both male and female connector.

At first I couldn't believe it, and after having checked with GPU-Z, the 290x is drawing around 180W and the 390 is drawing 200W.

Can someone tell me what is up? To my knowledge a connector should easily take above 200W. The wires are 16 AWG.


EDIT: Might want to add the when I finally got the PCI-e power cables dislodged, they had only melted around the 12V pins.

I tend to add silicone oil to my electrical connectors, makes them conduct better (despite it being an insulator) and the connector fits easier; also discourages oxidation.

Just don't use silicone oil on high current switches... as the sparking can form glass.

AWG16 probably shouldn't carry more than about 10amps

The 180W/200W isn't the total power consumption of the graphics card. It also doesn't matter much if it has 16AWG wires or 18AWG wires, both should be sufficient. The problem is the connection isn't perfect, gold plated connectors and/or pins or a thicker/better pins would help.

So in my case, would it be stupid to salvage new connectors and wires from an old PSU? Of course making sure that the wires' 12V and GND match up correctly with the 1500W and GPU.

Isn't silicone an insulator? I might be a noob here, but to me it seems like he is recommending me to apply an insulator to my connector pins.

There is a quantum tunneling effect going on; but yes, it does seem strange to be using an insulator.

I didn't mean to be mean; I just didn't want to give advice that might then be generalized to high current switches.

It wasn't aimed as criticism, it was intended as a solution.

P.S. when my brake switch went recently I replaced it but was sure not to treat it with silicone oil; but when my headlights went recently I was sure to treat the connectors with silicone grease.

Probably depends on the stuff your using. But you should be careful with that, you don't want it leaking in your PSU if it's highly conductive.

Would salvaging an old CX 850M be a totally bad idea?

EDIT: Also, this video is stating the total opposite. Could you maybe find some literature that supports your statement?
