Default What is/could be the next exciting step in PSU design/performance?

Not complaining about the Guru crew here - but reviews of all these super-high-efficiency ultra-tight voltage well-crafted wonders get boring.

The G2 review was great, the Seasonic Prime original review was great, the TXM review was good, and the G3 review was fantastic.

But its kinda getting boring - "this unit is amazing" "no problems with it" "cable caps, bleh." "no berg connector, hallelujah" sort of repetitive review motions.

Is there anything interesting coming to PSUs? (NOT RGB junk!) Any interesting sfx, tfx, pico stuff out there? Can we please get one or two gutless wonder tear-downs or something?

Yo hablo non-technicalio

Intel says they are planning a compatibility disaster in 2020 when they want less than 150 miliseconds "response time" of PSUs from currently 250 miliseconds (table 11 in that DG)

They need this for the "Alternative Sleep Mode (ASM)"-feature of their CPUs / Windows "11"

= This means massive incompatibilities in between old non-ASM and new ASM systems (= PSUs).

= End users are screwed with ASM and we will sell a lot of extra PSUs

Lets hope that they also try to get rid of the bloody 3,3V rail they introduced 20 years ago.

+5V and +5VSB is fine though...

I have to specify more precisely:

INPRECISE: They need this for the "Alternative Sleep Mode (ASM)"-feature of their CPUs / Windows "11"

Actually for Windows 10 already, but they will do "something" in 2020.

From Intel, the current ATX12V 2.5 T3 max of 250 ms (formerly 500ms max) will be lowered even more to 150ms max in 2020 with ATX12V 2.6.

So we are going in T3 from:

ATX12V 2.5 = 100-500 ms => AVG 300
ATX12V 2.6 (2020) = #A = 100-250 ms => AVG 175
ATX12V 2.6 (2020) = #B = 100-150 ms => AVG 125

ergo, 250/125ms is really low (= too fast) for ATX12V 2.4/2.5 or older mainboards and CPUs trying to get power from a then new 2.6/2020 PSU.

For the new 250/125 max, that could be still ok, but 150/125 max ...

@Joe I've got a pair of XFX Pro 1250s new in a box here, spares, backups for my out-of-warranty 1250s. I realize they have a shelf-life, so I know I need to use them sooner than later anyways. Are you saying the forecast is that they wont be compatible with new Intel CPUs (+ a Win11) in 2020? Is it time to use them soon to get my $ worth? Then what, prepare to sell 'em off used in 2020 before they lose tremendous value? To buy new hardware in 2020 which will be Win11 compatible, requires buying a new PSU with it, is that about it? Windows se7en is gone in 2020, it was already a bad year lol Thanks Joe!

edit to new reply: I need to sell the used ones now while they still have value, bust out the gorgeous warrantied new ones, hmph, wreck the consumer-base for sleep states, who do they think they are

It is very simple:

They don't write this for fun in paragraph 4.1 (see pic)

They know that the "change" means that ATX12V 2.6 PSU cannot be downwards compatible.

Only thing is if MB makers will follow 100%. Especially for DIY-brands, they need cross-compatibility. HP, Dell, etc. have no need for that. But I doubt they can stretch the range due to Windows requirements. I read some Microsoft docs and they are extremely keen on a PC acting like a smartphone when being "awoken from it's NOT-sleep mode / always-on PC".

So, yes, IMHO 99% chance any <= ATX12V 2.5 PSU of today will not be compatible with a ATX 2.6 system and vice versa.

(For a true ATX 2.6 system, using older GPUs and other components may negate the incompatibility, as they do not support the new ASMs)
