Default OCZ ProXStream 1kw

I like this part:

There is much talk around the web that testing a power supply by using an actual PC is pretty meaningless. After doing some research and visiting sites like JonnyGuru (power supply master), we have come to the same conclusion. But we still elect to tell you how the voltage may or maybe have fluctuated in our own setup

GREATEST....REVIEW....EVER!!!

But seriously, what the heck kind of gloss-over review was that? No wonder manufacturers love giving their PSUs to websites like that, it's like entering a race knowing it's set up for you to win.

Rather poor editing IMO:

I’m not surprised by the stability of this PSU, as my 520 watt ProStream has served me well with the similar results
WTH is is the Prostream? I've only heard of old powerstreams?

Conclusion

I began this article by comparing this unit with the now aged ProXStream power unit, also from OCZ. The ProXStream was one of the best PSU of its time. However, the ProXStream can easily take over the realm the ProXStream once ruled.
Dodgy stuff.

I actually like tests on a real system, but it was poorly written. Sometimes it is good to have a perspective on the difference between how far a PSU can be pushed and how far YOUR system can push it. In the interests of economy, it may be acceptable if the latter results are good.

Sorry. I guess sites are caught in a bit of a catch-22 in these cases; they do not have the proper equipment to test a PSU yet they want to keep receiving review units. So, they have to review what is given to them and since they can't really properly test a PSU, they give it an Editor's Choice award or what-not.

The problem I DO have is that getting some realitively proper PSU testing equipment isn't that hard. Buying digital multimeter, a TCM or Kill-a-Watt power analyzer and a power supply tester will run a site less than $100. With those few instruments they can test voltage drops, effeciency versus other PSUs they have tested as well total power consumption of their systems. A PSU review doesn't NEED O-Scope readings to be a good review, nor does the PSU in question need to be loaded to the max. There are VERY few people out there that will stress a 1Kw PSU, so I think neglecting to test ANY PSU outside of a normal system is a huge injustice.

I rely on Jonny's reviews to determine how far a PSU can be pushed but it is always nice to see some reviews testing the PSUs inside actual systems. The problem is that these reviews almost never test the PSUs properly.

I can assure it costs a lot more than $100 to get the neccesary equipment even for the best of us bargain shoppers. The only item on the list needed that is probably less than $100 is a Kill-a-watt or if you are good on ebay a digital thermometer.

I bought a Fluke 177 for $150CAD from a garage sale last year. That is the top of the top, there are plenty good multimeters out there in the $50 price range.
