There are instances where card passes Furmark, but fails other tests (including actual games).

So a failing card, thermally stressed to the max, will pass a Furmark (and similar) tortures?

That's because Furmark unevenly over-stresses the GPU. Some of the GPU's functions are left practically untouched. Aside from that, newer versions of VGA drivers recognize Furmark (either by .exe name or by heuristics/behavior) and throttle the GPU as a countermeasure.

Unigine tech demos (Haven, Valley) and other 3D benchmark tools are better suited for testing. So is (prolonged) regular gaming.

Last night I ran 3DMark Sky Diver twice and Fire Strike once. I then proceed playing Far Cry 3 over 2 hours. Seems fine enough I guess

This, and also AFAIK Furmark stresses pretty much only the GPU core, not the memory.

I'd suggest using an app/game that heavily utilises DirectX11 features. Eg. Crysis 2 w/Dx11 enabled is regarded to be a decent way of testing stability.
