Default Raidmax Volcano selling for $120 on newegg

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817152026
No PFC, at most 36amps on the 12v rails, although the actual number is probably lower. This smacks of a 450Watt PSU masquerading as a 630watt PSU. Even if it is modular, how can they justify $120?

They can't justify it. I think this Volcano needs a review like the one Paul gave the X2 750W!

They call it the volcano due to the flames that shoot from it when it blows.

Everybody loves to rave about how wonderful newegg is, but newegg still keeps selling horrible junk, like power supplies that go boom. If newegg wanted to do the right thing, they'd not help make matters worse by facilitating the unaware masses getting horrible supplies, in fact, they should be helping to educate.

I would not blame newegg. It is up to the consumer to do his/her research before choosing a product. Newegg merely offer a wide range of choices.

It is not so eay for the customer do his reseach. Many reviewrs cant do a proper review dont have the equipment to do it.

Even Ultra X2 750W got some favorable reviews. I just wonder how many Ultra X2 750W got sold just because some unknowlegble persons read a shitty review.

It's very much a dealers responsibility to educate their customrs and tell the customers why they dont sell some bad psu's. AFAIK there are no online dealers in Sweden who don't sell any bad units. It's a shame.

check out this review of the volcano for a laugh:

Load Setup (large power requirements)

* AMD 64 3500+
* 1GB memory (2 x 512)
* Powercolor x800GTO 128MB
* Foxconn Winfast NF4SK8AA-8EKRS
* 3 x ATA hard drives 7200RPM
* 1 x DVD burner
* Running: Compressing 2 ZIP files on separate hard drives in Winzip, copying files from the DVD burner to the third hard drive, playing MP3s in Windows Media Player, and playing Quake 4.

With all the hardware in the load setup working hard, there’s no way it should max out a 630 Watt power supply. If it had, there would have been a problem. By educated estimates, the load setup is slightly more than 420 Watts, and the Volcano handles it with no sweat.

Of course, no power supply delivers its entire rated Wattage. Some of its power is lost to resistance and converted into heat. At peak use, the Volcano power supply is rated to never drop below 75% efficiency. If it was turning an entire 25% of its power into heat, that would give you 475 effective Watts. It was running a lot more efficient than that; the Volcano was running more than 10 degrees C cooler than my Antec Truepower 430. Logically, the Raidmax PSU is considerably more efficient than the Antec.
