Arrow Corsair SP2500 Gaming Speaker System Review

Quote:
Most of us enjoy plugging our computers into a good sounding set of speakers. Until relatively recently, however, it seemed that decent dedicated computer speakers were really hard to come by. Either manufacturers didn't care about decent sound, or didn't think there was a market for it. Corsair is the latest big name to come along to try and change that. Today, I'm taking an in depth look at the SP2500 in their Gaming Audio Series, which promises a lot for a low price. We'll see about that right now, yes we will.

Those cap choices didn't surprise me.
The SP2200's are filled with Chang & Ltec caps.

Though, what did surprise me (About this guy and the SP2200's) is that the cap choice was so low, given that even most common knowledge on audio sites (like HeadFi) state that quality caps are a must, as these cheap guys can ruin SQ the older they get.

I'll admit though, the extent of my audio knowledge goes about as far as "I've tried B-M and here's what I thought they sounded like."
(Besides the normal understanding of how the electronics work.)

One thing I forgot to note in the review - a lot of people don't realize it, but the motor of the subwoofer produces heat in the sealed side of the enclosure, especially when it's being pushed. This heat has nowhere to go but through the metal plate and the wooden housing.

Decent caps are IMO just as important in the DSP/amp section as they are in the SMPS side of the box.

You should throw that in there, I didn't think about it, as I already understood that much.

Still though, you did an excellent job Wolf

Thanks... it was a heck of a lot of work.

And the sub being right in the path of the flood water didn't help. Which, BTW, is another reason I'm glad they sealed the thing up so well. It was bone dry when I took it apart to inspect for damage.

For those curious, The Conflict can also be found on Youtube, though it is not the one off Tears Laid Low. It may or may not be the same recording, but sounds like it is.

Whaaaaat, I missed out on Corsair making audio-stuff.

Is Corsair taking over the worlds
First memory, then they had flash, cases, cooling, PSU's then SSDs and now Audio.

What's next...
Some Corsair Motherboards and Graphics cards?

Surprises me that there ain't no Corsair Keyboards and Mice.

I wonder if Corsair is going to start selling surround sound speakers as well, I can't imagine the market for 2.1 speaker is that big.

I wouldn't be surprised if I saw a Corsair mechanical keyboard line up (since OEM's and pre-built designs are easy to come by.)

Mice on the other hand, would be a bit harder (if they chose to go for the high performance / gaming market.)

The market for 5.1 is weird. Everyone seems to want 5.1, but almost nobody can set it up with the rear speakers actually behind them. For a PC, at least.

For this, we figured it was more important to create the best 2.1 audio speakers we could for a PC for the price point. I have a set and while they aren't perfect, they're better than anything else I've heard near that price point.

So Redbeard, when can we expect some really nice mechanical keyboards?

Some External Harddrive (/SSD) enclosures to match the style of Graphite is also very nice!

But I smell I go a little off-topic.
