Word is, Sony's gone Chinese in their more affordable sets. They were losing too much money.

And that's really where the whole industry is heading - China. And to be totally honest, that M2762D used a Chinese panel. I actually have more faith in that model now than the M2780D, with its in house LG made panel. Aside from terrible backlight bleed, that thing worked and worked and worked. I was going to review it until LG took so bloody long to get things done it was pulled off the market.

And that's why these cheap 40" Chinese makes are still so tempting. I know what I'm getting with those. No chance of warranty service, so no barriers to me opening the thing up and fixing it myself. I've probably got years more experience than the monkeys in their service department anyway. Dirt cheap, so maybe I can afford to gamble in case the panel turns out bad. They're making them by the truckload, too, for all the people who just want the cheapest thing they can get, so parts aren't too hard to find.

It's LG's abysmal customer service that I really can't stand. If you're going to jerk me around, be up front about it. Don't sit there and tell me you're taking care of me by sending me more junk.

So far, what it's coming down to is can I stand a 32" 720P model, or do I absolutely need 1080P. If the former, I'm looking at a Samsung LED backlit model. If the latter, the only way I'm going to get there is on the slow boat to China.

And let's face it - I deal with electronics from China literally every week. I'm used to it.

LG just got back to me, said they were trying to find a closer service center and if not would let me exchange it. Just give them four days, and...

Told them to go pound sand - the warranty is void, and I don't want another one. In four days, I'll have its replacement anyway. Well, more like six, but who's counting?

LG may be on the verge of figuring out that you are a part of a tech review site and are attempting to mitigate the bad publicity.

screw 'em

I've already told them who I am back when they sent me that M2762D. Said, "give me the one I paid for or I'm going to review this thing to make my money back on the price difference."

That did get their attention.

you should do a review in a style similar to the way Jeremy Clarkson (BBC Topgear) will do a review of a car he doesn't particularly like. Include "features" like how many Post-It notes will fit around the bezel and how well it functions as an air brake on a car.

Had no idea that up until this year, Hitachi was still making the LCD panels in their sets. Might have to consider them... The Source has decent prices on their stuff, and I always liked Hitachi.

Heck, I still have a 1975 vintage CRT Hitachi that my grandparents owned. Was still as bright as the day it was new last time I powered it up.

My friend got a Sony 32" LED tv, really good picture and the integrated speakers aren't that bad. It's well ventilated in the back and due to that, I was able to easily peak inside and lo and behold, all NCC caps. My brother bought a 46" Samsung LED tv, that is also very nice, though not as sturdy feeling as the Sony.

But I remember Hitachi. Their old CRT's were indestructible. I have a 22" dated from 1999 that still has a very sharp picture and good colors, it also weighs more than a small car. I have a 1988 Samtron monitor that is a rebranded Hitachi. That use to serve as unsecured winter weight in the back of my truck. Plug it in, and it still works!

My uncle's 1982 vintage Zenith just died 4 years ago.

They really and truly do not make them like they used to.

For what it's worth, I have a 17" Sony, my first flat screen monitor, which I bought in Jan. 2005.
The panel failed after a couple of years or so, within the warranty period.

I contacted Sony here in the UK, and a few days later a courier turned up with a temporary monitor and took away my dud one.
About a couple of weeks later, the courier turned up again with my monitor with a new panel and took away the temporary one.

It is still going strong today.
I can't fault the back up by Sony at all.
