Default Rippling on a PSU modded as a 12V source (SS-300TFX)

UPDATE: Oops, just noticed there was already a thread for this unit; I'll post there. Mods, please delete.

Hi All,

Just came across this awesome site today!

I have a few questions regarding rippling on a modded Seasonic SS-300TFX. This question is outside of PSU usage in the conventional sense, but I'm hoping someone here might be able to add some thoughts.

I recently came across this compact PSU, and I decided to turn it into a benchtop power supply to run a DC battery charger (or other devices).

Since I only intend to operate it as a 12V DC supply for now, I did the conversion by adding external lugs to the ground and +12V rails. I am getting a clean 12V source from this setup, but any time I set the charger to a current above 14A, the PSU begins to struggle and the current drops back down. For instance, if I set the charger to charge at 17A, the current readings fluctuate between 14A-17A.

Based on the review on the site (http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...Story&reid=190), it seems you were able to get a continuous output up to 20A on the 12V rail. Is that correct or am I operating it out of spec at 17A? If not, do you think the unit I have may be defective?

I know this question goes beyond standard boundaries, but I'm completely baffled. Any help you can offer is certainly appreciated. Thanks!
