My apologies for causing unnecessary confusion.

However the article

makes the capacitor failure conjecture even more plausible.

Funny thing is... Corsair didn't upgrade anything in those units going from 7 to 10 years.

wonder if corsair extended warranty because competition was doing it and they thought they better add it or look bad

Consumer level product. And in this case, a highly complex consumer level product.

I'd be lying to you if I told you that an AX1200 was less susceptible to failure than a much simpler CX-M.

Build quality only goes so far. When you have more components, you have more potential points of failure.

MIL-HDBK-217 agrees with you that 'a circuit's reliability decreases when components are added'; so simplicity may favor the CX-M

Of course this is not valid for adding protective components
