Default Surprise, surprise.... (not really surprised)... NOT an FDB fan

Of course, Globe Fan didn't even bother changing the part number of their existing sleeve bearing fan that's been on the market for ages. The just changed where it used to say "Sleeve Bearing" and put "Fluid Dynamic Bearing" on there instead.

It's not even rifled. Just an ordinary, old school, sleeve bearing fan.

Fan taken out of an EVGA BQ, BTW.

I was strongly suspecting that something is wrong with those fans writing FDB all over and still keeping the sleeve-bearing model number. Thanks for sharing Jonny!

Jon do you have some more pictures, uploaded somewhere else? The forum upload has to much compression.

I don't have the EVGA PSU anymore. But I can confirm SilverStone's findings. I took apart a different Globe fan claiming to be FDB and it did have the herring bone pattern. The EVGA one did not.

Here a picture of an FDB that I had taken:

So, apparently they use the same parts as a sleeve bearing fan, but change out the actual "bearing".

I think I'm actually starting to like rifle bearing better. Here's a (shitty) picture of one of those:

So, is it possible Andyson is just buying those fans from some obscure source and not doing proper checking?

Hey, it has BQ in the name...it must be good(love my Texas brisket barbecue)

But then again, it could just be B quality. Which would make more sense.

Just no reason to buy B quality when you can get A for just a little more.

Unfortunately, that's pretty common for a number of other OEMs, and some of the retail brands don't actually have anyone on staff who understands this stuff. So they just ask company X for a 1*0mm FDB fan and they say "Sure, it's $X.xx" without any independent R&D going into the product from the company.

Unfortunately, you also have some brands like Arctic Cooling who have been informed of this fact. Their F8/9/12 & Pro models all use a rifle bearing but not a Fluid Dynamic yet they still market them as such. BitFenix & SilenX are in a similar state.

As a matter of fact; of 12 brands & 104 products on Newegg right now with the FDB description, I can only count 6 that are actually known to be using a FDB. There is a small handful of products I've yet to see taken apart or looked at myself.

At this point, it's just better to assume that the product is a sleeve bearing unless proven otherwise.

Speaking from personal experience; you'll also see similar labels on YS Tech, ADDA, Yue Lin, & Hong Sheng products. ADDA has a 50/50 shot of being a Rifle or their FDB-clone and Yue Lin is either Rifle or the Sintec bearing.
