Off-topic:
I wonder who is going to be the first to put CCFL's in PSU's?

The Ultra X2 550W has a pair of 6" CCFL's in it.

Wow, I didn't know that. I thought it would be really hard to squeeze in. Got any pics Jon?

If you look at the PCB on the ones that I reviewed, it looked nothing like that....

Where did you get the review sample from? If it was directly from the manufacturer they have some control in what they provide.

I say their QC is horrible, because it is their job to screen each batch. Seeing they're letting through something like this get out is not a good indication.

They actually have their own forums and there is a comment section. I posted what I honestly feel and got banned. There is a manufacturer rep who posts under ULTRA_jon and you can see he's quite a jerk.

You do realize how QC works for large batches of items right?

I mean holy shit companies have completely defective units slip through so obviously they have mediocre quality control

And surely you did nothing to provoke it.

A PSU assembly line is manned by many people and puts out thousands of units a day. Sure, a few of those people are QC, but they can't possibly check every aspect of every unit. As you said, the only usability problem you experienced was a problem with the fan controller, so I can understand how the unit passed the burn-in.

As for your deleted thread, if it was a thread like this I can understand why. On an enthusiast site like this, any brand is fair game. But if you go to a manufacturer's tech support forum, not for tech support but to complain about QC issues as if they run rampid throughout the entire product line (which I think has been proven to be untrue from the posts here.)

As for the source of the review sample, I think I can safely say that the review samples are drop shipped straight from the Ohio warehouse where every one else's product comes from and not cherry picked. It's unwise for companies to cherry pick their review samples. They almost always get caught.

Reminds me of the PSU I just got the other day from a certain company that was so ballantly cherry-picked, it wasn't even funny. To people who know what to look for, cherry picking sticks out like a sore thumb most of the time.
