Even if you only play games with your PC, Ryzen 5 is mostly more interesting then similar priced i5's. Only a small group can better choose a i5. That are the gamers, that don't play CPU heavy games and prefer 120 fps or more.

Anandtech review of the 6c/12t R5 1600X.

IMHO getting an R5 1600 for just $219, then OCing it a bit to 3.8~4.0GHz == spectacular bang for the buck (~ same performance than $430 i7 Extreme 6800K).
