So, I bought Antec True Power New 650 which is dead silent with my HD5850. When I upgraded to HD7970, PSU is coil whining when under load. Browsing, idling I have never noticed any whine.
I tried some other psu which also had whining with my HD7970. Is this PSU whining bad for PSU itself, or maybe for its longevity? Any other solution than RMAing 7970? Thanx. |

Use V-sync or an other program that caps your fps.

Sometimes it does happen that an older PSU like the Antec you bought, may start to whine when combined with the latest graphics cards.
The only thing you may try in this case is a PCIe 'adaptor' with a big cap (3300µF, 16V) between +12V and GND. If that doesn't work, you may have to live with that annoying noise or buy a new PSU. |

Thanx for idea with capacitor. This might do the trick if interference is HF.

Whining is not a problem except it's annoying. Usually it's not harmful.
Video cards and motherboards could whine too. Sometimes It's hard to tell the noise source outside the case. |

Yes, I have located source of whining. It is GPU which is loudly whining and also PSU, but not so strong. I guess this whining transits from GPU to PSU.
