Default foam pads for hard drives

Hi

You guys probably know that some ipods and macbook airs have foam pads stuck onto them to dampen the vibrations. Do you guys know where I could buy them in a sheet so I could apply them onto new drives
This is because when you peel away the old one you can't use it anymore.

Any hardware store, probably even online. And Amazon has enough kinds of foam / rubber blocks to keep you looking awhile, or this one just to pick something. They have a ton of sheet-rolled stuff too.

Pretty sure the pads you reference are only there to prevent the drive from bouncing or shifting around inside the device though! So if you're thinking of using them on desktop drives I'd suggest just screwing the drives into the cage directly to best reduce the vibration.

i need ones which are ESD safe, so that it could go on the surface of the PCB. I wouldn't use it for desktops, just macbook airs, iPods.

Should still be fine as long as it isn't felt based. A roll of one-side adhesive foam tape could also work, although the foam density will depend on the space constraints. Link

thank you. you were very helpful. out of curiosity, what is your main expertise? electrical engineering (power supplies, etc)

which one is better for shockproofing a HDD? high or low density?

edit: I think I'll just buy these ipod foam thingies on ebay.

None of those actually! I'm knowledgeable regarding computer hardware and watercooling, but I'll leave PSUs and electrical engineering to the experts.

As I indicated the foam density is a question of how much filler material you need. If there's a big gap then denser foam is better as it will keep the drive from shifting about. But if there is minimal room / tolerances in the drive housing then low density foam would likely be required. I couldn't be more specific without seeing the exact applications in question.

Whatever you decide to use just be sure it doesn't distort or compress the PCB or top of the drive housing when fitting everything back together.
