Default Thorough review of the Cooler Master Real Power PRo 850W

When this thing was available for $70 rebate, I couldn't find any websites that had a "good" review of this model (the 750w had lots of reviews), from reading here, I decided to take a chance on it.

I just got it and won't be able to install it on a new system until the end of the month. Someone who is building a pc asked me what was the psu i got so cheap again and it there were any reviews...So I took a look for some reviews again and found this one:

http://hardware.gotfrag.com/portal/story/35892/?spage=1

There are still very good deals on this (I saw for $130). They compared it favorable to the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 which actually costs more.

I am by not particularly knowledgeable about psu, so if you guys say i am missing something completely, I won't doubt you.

Hmmm...

Here you can see that the numbers are not as impressive as on the Silencer 750 EPS12V power supply
Wow.. Because the voltage was 0.04V farther from +12V than the Silencer, never mind the voltage barely dropped at all?

I must be easily impressed.

Still a decent review. And yes, not having an on/off switch is odd.

I think the end, they thought the cooler master was better,

" This makes the RPP850 a full $50 more expensive than the very comparable Silencer 750 that was also tested in this review. However, the increased power output, just as impressive rail stability, and native ability to support dual 8800GTX graphics cards make this card a bit more attractive than the 750 in our opinion."

And they didn't really bash the powersupply on the 0.04v...

"Here you can see that the numbers are not as impressive as on the Silencer 750 EPS12V power supply, but we have to stress that they are still well within spec. The difference of 4 to 5 hundredths of a volt that we see between the two power supplies really has no practical affect on system performance, it merely looks nicer to be closer to the target values."

I was looking for reviews of that unit recently too and thought you might be interested in the load tester results at technic3d here:

http://www.technic3d.com/article-389...s-850-emba.htm

They don't really say a lot unfortunately. You can find out a bit more about the load distribution used from reading their testing methodology (http://www.technic3d.com/article-127...-netzteile.htm)

The individual rail OCP results were kind of interesting with all 6 of the 12V rails shutting down well above 18A, especially 12V3 and 12V4 at 35A and 30A. Seems it could take a 1080W load for a minute and would finally shut down at 1270W.

I don't think they over loaded all of the +12V rails at the same time.

no they didn't..that would have been over 1900W on the 12V's alone...think they just loaded them one at a time with enough load on the other voltage rails to keep things within spec just to see if the OCP works and at what level
