    Default Recommend PSU for 80 drives (not Corsair HX1050)

    In our current setup we use a mainboard, low power CPU, some PCI and converter cards, and a boot drive. That base with 0 data drives in total consumes 70 till 74 Watt. Measured using a "watts up?" meter at 230V when the system is idle.

    When using a Corsair HX1050 PSU we are able to boot the system having 74 drives of type 2TB Toshiba DT01ABA200 (= Hitachi HDS5C3020BLE630) attached. The peak power consumption is 1254 Watt on start up. Only in incidental cold start cases a PSU over ... (current?) protection kicks in. The BIOS is configured to always start when power is available (Restore on AC Power Loss = Power On). This causes the system to start again after 2 till 3 seconds. That second "warm" start runs ok. Now the system consumes between 313 and 330 Watt.

    15 Minutes after power on some S.M.A.R.T. testing routines are started on each drive at the same moment. Resulting in permanent power consumption levels of 400 - 460 Watt. These levels cause a PSU over ... (current?) protection to kick in (at the 5V DC line?) after approximately 1 minute. Removing 10 drives (remaining 64 drives) stops the PSU from shutting down. Also disabling the off line automatic S.M.A.R.T. tests stop system shutdown having 74 drives attached (at least for 1 day up till now).

    When wishing to read/write on all drives at once, like these S.M.A.R.T. off line tests do, which power supply can be recommended for 80 drives?

    Requirements:
    • efficient (80plus gold or better)
    • available in Europe
    • has a heavy 5V line (measured in a linked test/review)
    • is not a Corsair HX1050 (we tested this one)

    PS There is a small capacity increased planned (74 to 80 drives), that is why the title is 80 drives.

    Have you tried using staggerd star-up / spin-up (if your controllers support it?)

    That would limit the amount of drives turning on, and thus should keep the PSU's OPP from tripping.

    As for an alternative suggestion; without dipping into server units, the Strider 1500w would be your best option.

    We didn't try staggered spin-up, as the LSI 2008 SAS controller BIOS has been disabled to speed up to boot process by 5 to 10 minutes. No thank you LSI SAS controller, you don't need to detect all 64 attached drives, that later on is being repeated by the OS.

    How often are you actually going to be rebooting the machine?

    Staggered Spin-Up would be the only option to be honest unless you ramp up the power supply to ridiculous levels.

    If you want 1254 watts on start up a Seasonic X-1250 Gold seems in the no brainer catagory. Please read:

    First choise, although not Gold, is the Silverstone ST1500 which has ultra strong 5V/3.3V rails (280W combined!!!) since it uses an old school approach in power distribution.

    Then goes Corsair AX1200i with 180W on the minor rails.

    The HCP 1200 has better minor rails than pretty much any other high output unit except for the Enhance built ST1500/TP1500 (Silverstone/Thermaltake).

    I'd probably wait for the HCP 1300, should hit the market pretty soon.

    The Corsair AX1200i has been measured by technic3d for its real world over current protect points, which are:
    • 3,3V: 44A
    • 5V: 43A
    • 12V1: 116A


    The Corsair HX1050 - that we currently use - has been put to an OCP test by technic3d too, its measured over current protection points are:
    • 3,3V: >36A
    • 5V: >55A
    • 12V1: 132A


    Due to this, I don't see that a Corsair AX1200i is an improvement over the HX1050 for powering 80 drives.

    According to technic3d the measured 5V OCP for an HCP 1000 is 52A.

    Is there an OCP measurement available for the 5V rail of an Antec HCP 1200?

    It should be around 50A as well, and it's pretty much the most you're gonna' get out of a consumer PSU... also it should be easily enough for the 70 something drives you have there, and since it isn't (given the numbers you quoted for the HX 1050) I suspect you have some other 5v heavy gear in the system (maybe some of those controllers?)... you should look for a server unit or think about setting up a dual PSU config for that system (if you're set on sticking with consumer units).
