    Default Some parts...

I was given a system by an ex girlfriend, who had replaced it due to it being so loaded with virii, that it wouldn't even boot. So I started tearing into it, here's what I've found so far:

    X-fi Platinum with front panel
    7950GX2
    2x1GB Corsair XMS DDR2 800
    2x WD1500AHFD 150GB Raptor X

Still haven't gotten to the motherboard, processor, or the optical drives.

The X-fi will be replacing my Audigy 2ZS Platinum if it works. Not really sure what I'm going to do with the video card, as I don't have an SLI board to test it.

Assuming the hard drives are good, I'm thinking to RAID0 them and use them as my OS, Page File, Applications, and Games partitions. That is, if they would be faster than my current setup of Caviar Black 750GB for the above partitions, and Spinpoint F4 2TB for Documents.

You don't need a motherboard that supports SLI to use that video card, although it's not exactly a great performer by today's standards.

The GX2 is a dual PCB card, it's already in SLI.

Nevermind, I just did some digging, and apparently that generation had a bridge chip to do the work instead of having the motherboard do it.

Quick RAID question. Would a RAID 5 array work with the two Raptor X's, and a 320GB drive for mirroring?

    That's not RAID 5.
Are you trying to create a stripe set from the Raptors (a RAID 0 array), and then use the 320 to mirror that stripe set?

If so, the answer using just Windows is no(AFAIK); if you have a RAID card that would present the RAID 0 as a single drive to Windows, then Windows would probably let you make a mirror from the 320 and the RAID. However, performance will be unimpressive (limited by slowest drive).

If I were set on using the Raptors in RAID 0, I'd just backup often to the 320; I'd probably use imaging software like Acronis to create a backup that could be quickly restored when the RAID 0 fails.

    +1
Using same scenario on my home fileserver - 2x Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB's in RAID-0 are getting backuped weekly to 2x Samsung Spinpoint F4 2TB's in RAID-1.

Cool, I think I'll try that, then.

It's *probably* a yes, but do you think my VX550 can handle the two Raptors, the 320GB Caviar Blue, 750GB Black, and 2TB F4? It's system 1 in my sig.
