I'll back up the Opty argument. I just got a 165 last week. As you know, these things run stock at 1800. I've gotten mine up to 2880 Prime stable, but my cooling solution isn't up to par, so I'm running it at 2700 until I can get my cooling sorted out. Sweet little chips.

I hate to see 939 go, my AN8-SLI has had a very good run though.

Speaking of "dead" sockets, just got a 1.4ghz pentium 3 Tualatin for my moms 5 year old computer for $45 on ebay. Works like a charm, thank god her motherboard(even without a AGP slot) was an VIA somethingapollo-T(as in tualatin).

She has a nvidia 6200 256mb and 1.5gb of ram, think it could pass for Vista?

    Default Overclocking Optys

IIRC, isn't the 170 one of the "sweet spots" when it comes to OC'ing? Seems I recall reports of folks pushing them to 3 GHz..

Yea my friend (djBon2112 on [H]) just bought a used opty 170(de-lidded) which seems like it could hit 3+GHz, mind you he is on water, and because his PSU is holding him back he's running at 2.81GHz atm 24/7 till he gets a better PSU.

Personally I have a AMD Athlon X2 4400+ S939 running at 2.6GHz on air, hoping to get at least 2.8 out of it on water (lidded) once I get my water set up. Its running on my A8R32-MVP Deluxe which I got the day they were released That motherboard has given me a good run so far.

I don't think I'm gonna upgrade my MB/VID/RAM/CPU (just about everthing :P) till the R600 refresh (R680 or w/e) and the AMD Quad Core (Barcelona or w/e) come out (Can you tell I'm a huge AMD/ATi fan yet :P)

I have an opty 170 running 2.9ghz fully stable running on air (TT BT). I also have an opty 144 @3.2GHZ fully stable on air (TT BT). These are still great CPU's. If you look around you can find good deals on these and mobos which make a great cheap system.
