You know up until 2004, Church's and Popeye's were owned by the same company.

But I do love those greasy, buttery Popeye's biscuits. Those have to be about 10 points each.

Now about as far east as I can go in New Jersey. The van's AC gave up the ghost somewhere in Maryland. Will be recharged when we get to Ontario, just before the trip home. I pray it holds up for those few days.

I did try one new place today - Friendly's. I am not even kidding when I had what has to be in the top five burgers of all time there, and I am one heck of a serious burger connoisseur. Had the grilled cheese burger melt. I HAVE to have that again before the trip ends - we have no equivalent up north. And the ice cream... yeah, if we had these restaurants up north, I'd be living in the nearest location.

Supper was at another travel center Popeye's. This one wasn't as good, but it still beat the pants off Colonel Sanders.

Friendly's is a bit of a chain of dives...but they have good food...and the ice cream is always amazing.

IMO Friendly's is a lot better than Denny's or Waffle House or White Castle

also try to find a Perkin's

We have them in Canada... I can wait for Perkins

Friendly's wasn't too bad, at least the location I went to. They were seriously busy. I figured the quality probably varied from location to location.

The #1 and #2 burgers on my list are both from now closed steakhouses. The Sirloiner in Vancouver, and the west side Saskatoon location of Bonanza. I've never met another Bonanza that was that good, anywhere. Have yet to try a Ponderosa down here - same chain, different name.

I somehow feel that White Castle doesn't belong in that list. White Castle is just fast food like McD's, Burger King, etc. Sit down diner type would just be Denny's, Perkins, Friendly's, Waffle House....

The best diners are the privately owned ones. We have a few up here, but I haven't really fallen in love with any of them, but down in Tampa we had Nikki's. That place was awesome.

We interrupt this discussion of food with a picture from the top of Absecon lighthouse:

This part of Atlantic City isn't in great shape, but by golly I think these people are trying to out-friendly us Canadians. We went to the beach right in front of a high rise tenement, and it was probably the most relaxing 90 minutes I've had all year.

They need to convert several blocks around the lighthouse to parkland or something. You have upscale new houses on one side, and a slum on the other.

Try and find a Red Robin or Logan's roadhouse. Logan's roadhouse is more of a steak/chicken place than a burger place, but they are pretty good. Red Robin has awesome burgers though.

I miss Logan's. We had them in Florida, but they're not here in Illinois. We have "Texas Roadhouse", but it's not the same.

We didn't have Red Robin in Florida, but they're all over up here. I haven't tried them yet because I thought they were just another Chili's, Applebees, etc. type of thing.
