Default A friend has this problem....

Switched the desktop on this morning to find something very wrong.

When I turned the power on the power light, which is usually a steady blue, was flashing on and off and there was a clicking sound in time with that and that's as far as it went; no boot up and nothing on the screen. It was trying to load windows, but it just didn't 'sound' the same as usual.

So, took the side of the case off to see if I could find anything obvious and couldn't. Checked everything was seated properly, which it seemed to be. Took the memory out and put it back in again. Removed a bit of dust off the fans.

    Tried again. Same scenario.

Changed the graphics from the card to the onboard variety and hey presto, Windows had loaded. However, things still don't 'seem' as they should. It's not sounding right, for a start. Sorry, I realise I'm being a bit vague.

I have removed the gfx card and drivers, but no change.

Any ideas what caused the problem?

Her PSU is a Corsair VX550, I don't know what hardware is in the rest of her system.

Click means a mechanical problem, means the hard drive usually.

Thanks for taking time to reply.
I don't know if it boots into windows, I get the feeling it does not.
    I will enquire.

Sorry this is all vague, just trying to find some answers from those that know about these things....

Probably the HDD dying, back-up the files & replace the HDD.
Yes. One of the last commincations I had with Dave Hammock before he disappeared from the web was how a major brand single +12V rail PSU wasn't shutting down when shorted. We were literally arc welding with the PSU. Hopefully Dave's absense isn't due to the fact that he got over zealous with the welding.
