I know this is circumstantial but I have at least 3 PSUs running that are 5+ years old in file servers.

    WE all do!

In real life I know there are switching regulators that I helped design and build back in early 80's that are still going strong! These are primary in telcom systems.
Yes. One of the last commincations I had with Dave Hammock before he disappeared from the web was how a major brand single +12V rail PSU wasn't shutting down when shorted. We were literally arc welding with the PSU. Hopefully Dave's absense isn't due to the fact that he got over zealous with the welding.

Telcom?!? Don't get me stated on telcom. I try to ID phone whenever I go into a business. I was at the doctor yesterday and noticed that they were using an Avaya Partner (has to be the most common phone system in existence). Receptionist had an 18D on her desk. I wanted to just reach over and start programming it.

Just give them this for Christmas:

Never mind it costs almost as much as the P/S.

Back when I was ordering $5k to $10K workstations like peanuts, every one that did not have a UPS had one of these.

Same here 2 "servers" (one Compaq dual PIII 1GHz and one custom with PII 350 and a crappy PSU) running 24/7/365 for 10 years. And I hope it will last another 10 years.

    Thank you!

I insist that unless their building is pre-wired into an existing fail-over over system, usually UPS backed by generators, that every station have its own APC UPS. You would not believe the reduction of required tech support this creates!

What fans are installed and how high is the average power consumption?
    Let me guess:
    Far under 100W?

A pentium 3 system doesn't use any power at all, it's negligible (well, I guess the system uses under 50W at max)...

And now imagine a high end gaming machine that's really used for gaming...
Or that uses about 150W (or more) in idle...

Payne, quit adding in qualifiers to your bogus statement.....I guess if you keep adding "But this" and "But that" to your original statement, you'll eventually get to a point that you are making a valid argument.

But, going on your original statement, it's just wrong as many have shown.

And to bring up power users and gamers, as mentioned, those are extreme niche markets of the overall computer market.....along the lines of 1-2% of all computer users. So that argument of yours about gamers and power users demonstrates the exceptions, not the overall trend or experiences of the vast majority of computer users.

The point is that it's very likely that your PSU has a defect between thee and ten years of age, especially if they're under load.
    And don't forget the fan!

We don't talk 'bout some low power systems from 10 years ago...
