    Question Combine 12V rails for load testing?

    Hi... Long time lurker, first time poster!

    I got my hands on some load testing equipment, and was going to try it out on some PSUs... Basically, I have four channels. Two smaller ones I see being good for 3.3V and 5V rails, and two larger ones which would be good for 12V rails.

    While the larger ones could handle 50A+ at 12V each, there are just two of them. What would be the best way to test multiple 12V rails? I know people have done it, but I don't know exactly how, and advice on the smart way to do it would be appreciated.

    Not to burst your bubble, but you'd be missing two rails - -12V and 5VSB. The first one isn't that important, but the second one you may want.

    No big mystery about combining 12V rails - you just wire them all together. Don't do this for CWT PUC designs though... on them, you have to make sure the 12V from each side is separate from each other.

    OK, thanks.

    No bubbles burst, but I appreciate the suggestion. I could probably add something for testing those other rails eventually, if I stay interested, but I am just getting going and will use what I have so far. Simultaneously I can do four right now, and having 3.3V, 5V, and 2x 12V seems like the best route to take.

    And thanks for the answer. I was hoping it was that simple, but figured it best to be safe and ask a noobish question.

    Has anyone compiled a list of CWT PUC PSUs? I know Thermaltake and Corsair have a few, but that is about all I know.

    Gigabyte, Xigmatek, In-win, Koolance and so on.
    If you see an 1KW unit with long enclosure & 14cm fan & CWT style modular interface & two 12V rails generating 5V and 3.3V separately, google its review and you're highly possible to see a PUC inside.

    Does anyone knows if the 12V rails in the PUC design share a common ground or even the grounds of each 12V rail (and 5V&3.3V rails) are separate from each other?

    I sure don't know but you can do a continuity test with a multimeter and find out.

    thanks Makalu for the answer. I am waiting an In Win 1200 for review (PUC design) so I will find out soon.

    My load tester has two independent 12V load banks but the 3.3 and 5V load banks share a common ground between each other and with one of the 12V load banks. This is the reason I was asking about common grounds. I hope I will be able to test it without any problems

    yeah I figured the question had to do with how your setup is wired. My guess is that the 24-pin connector grounds on it are all common which means 3.3V, 5V, -12V, 5Vsb and at least one of the 12V sources are too so I think that should work fine for you.

    I think that all grounds in the PSU should be common. As soon as I have it in my hands (in about 1-2 days) I will use a multimeter first and find out.

    As Wolf said above in PUC designs you must not short circuit all 12V rails and I am not going to do that (but what happens if you do so?)

    Crossloading - one side's 12V rails are loaded disproportionately and you get to visit ripple city.
