    Default 8800GTS or HD4850: which?

Trying to decide between the HD4850 and the 8800GTS. They're both similarly priced, but the 4850 is about $10-20 more expensive. Is the extra cost justifiable over the 8800GTS?

Yes, indeed. HD 4850 beat 9800 GTX and trading blows with 9800 GTX+ before 180 performance drivers showed up -something that should be answered by ATi soon with their own performance driver, reestablishing status quo.

We all know that 9800 GTX is faster than 8800 GTS 512 MB at stock, and nVidia driver support is poor to their older generation cards -nomatter the newer card is simply a rebadged card with the same GPU chips under its hood.

Try one with custom cooling or change stock cooling with an aftermarket one.
Stock cooling is a joke. Bad joke.

Got one with an aftermarket cooler installed, so it's alright. I ordered extra fans anyways, the case it's going into is a bit old and I'm worried about airflow.

Actually, in some cases the custom or aftermarket coolers perform worse than the stock cooler. To be honest, the custom/aftermarket coolers will keep the GPU much cooler; but the VRM's end up much worse.

Agree, but for HD4850 is not a problem. HD4870 is another story.

My idea of custom cooling was something like this. Dual-slot with exhaust from back of the case.

Worst comes to worst, I could replace the cooler with something beefier eventually.
