Default Chieftec ? How bad is it ?

    Hi.

I just sent my Thermaltake TR2 550W PSU to the RMA, apparently it was too weak and got overloaded, some capacitors started emiting a high-pitched sound and didn't want to risk.

Now I'm on a pretty tight budget.
I ordered a Chieftec Super CFT-650-14CS 650W PSU. Now I'm starting to worry. I can't find any Chieftec PSU review anywhere and I can't say I've actually heard of this company. Some people also said Chieftecs have a bad reputation of frying components. I don't know how true this is. I wish I'd ordered a PSU from a company with a better reputation.

I think I can call in and replace this PSU with a Xigmatek NRP-MC651 650W but I'm not 100% sure. Reviews for this Xigmatek are good.

Can anyone tell me if Chieftecs are good PSUs ? And not that kind of brand that fry your components ?

Depends on the unit. Some are Delta and very good, but others are Sirtec and only so-so. Yours is one of the Sirtecs. Cousin to the Coolmax CUG-700B I reviewed a while ago. The Xigmatek is a better unit.

Yep, Super CFT-650-14CS it's a CWT and I have a feeling that OW has reviewed his cousin.

Nice review. Should I worry about Chieftec as not being a good company that makes PSUs that fry computers or not ?

I've emailed the shop to send me one of those Xigmateks instead. Will see if they can do so or not.

Also, should I worry about those "loose heatsink screws" ?

It doesn't seem to be resulting in too many dead units for Corsair.

I've built some rigs with CWT made Chieftecs for work colleagues and they're still working fine much later, so fwiw in my book they're ok.

    Rig 1: Core i5 6600K - Asus Z170 Pro Gaming - Corsair Vengeance 16GB PC2666 RAM - MSI GeForce GTX1070 - Samsung EVO 850 500GB SSD + 2TB Seagate SSHD - Corsair RM550x - Fractal Design R5 - Win10 64

    Rig 2: Ryzen 1700X @ 3.9 GHz - Gigabyte X370 Gaming 5 - Corsair LPX 16GB PC3200 RAM - Gigabyte GeForce 1070 - 250GB Samsung EVO 850 SSD - Corsair RM650i - Win10 64
    HTPC: AMD A6-6400k - MSI FM2-A75IA-E53 mITX - 8GB Kingston HyperX 1866MHz - 3.5TB storage - Silver Power 460W passive - CM Elite 120
