VLC for most non-DVD videos, Windows Media Center (Vista Home Premium) with Nvidia Purevideo for DVDs, Winamp for audio. Any videos that won't play in the above, Media Player Classic, although VLC does a damn good job of playing most anything.

Somehow the search for a good media player has always been there in my mind. Never quite preferred the default WMP and have tried so many of them in the course of my computing. VLC, DivX Real but somehow I seem to lack a compact one, any suggestions! Currently I am playing the default Nero Showtime.

Not sure how much smaller than that you are going to get.
I've been using Gom player for about two years and I'm satisfied with it.

KMPlayer.
How about Portable VLC? I've used it a few times, works great.

WMP for the most part, I tried MP Classic for DVD's but didn't care for the image quality, so I use WMP running the PowerDVD XP codecs. WMP for CD ripping as well.
for audio I use the newest edition of winamp.
