I don't care. What I care about is when I stick piece of wire or paper clip @ say, 12V and instead of PSU turning off (or refusing to turn on) I have the wire/paper clip turning red and smoking, then it's clearly no good. Where are all the protections in such situation?

It was (is - still working in fact, after realizing, I turned the thing off rather quickly) a brand name PSU, but not Antec. Nor Corsair.

Contained within the common sense of the user, I guess...

If it doesn't protect from SC with pretty much no resistance, how in the hell it's gonna work against SC with measurable resistance, which was mentioned on this forum several times as possibility?

My personal view and opinion is that the SCP should be viewed the same way an airbag in a car is. It's meant to protect you if you screw up, but you can't expect a miracle save, and you should do your best to prevent an accident.

Just how many of those possible partial shorts were observed and reported anyway? I don't recall there being too many of such accounts... And this is probably the reason that this protection mechanism isn't more robust: In an ideal world, everything would be perfectly safe, but in a monetary economy, you have to draw the line somewhere.

In the real world, common sense of the user is quite lacking.

    To put things into context:

I have a PSU to test, supposedly multi-rail. I try to provoke OCP by overloading one of the rails with proper load (~300W worth of bulbs, more on inrush, it proved to trip OCP on several PSUs). Failed to do that.

I get more load on all rails, in hopes of shutting down a PSU due to total overload (which, again, other PSUs refused to start with). Nuh-uh.

Then I think that maybe at least it will work in case short circuit. I put a wire on ATX12V, turn PSU on, get "oh crap!" reaction and immediately switch it off. Wire turned red hot while it worked.

What do you think? I haven't provoked explicit SC on other PSUs seeing that they pass OCP/OPP, so I assumed that in case of SC either of these would work anyway.

Could be an isolated case, or a specific model. Which PSU is it?

It does take some fine tuning of the OCP.
Normal loads are about 0.5 ohms (or even less), including the cable resistance, and a "short" can be anywhere from 0.2 ohms and down.

From a safety point of view there should ideally be separate OCPs for each cable from the PSU.

Honestly, I never would have guessed. Which IC handles the protections on that one? I know, I'm getting lazy with research...
