    Default Silencer 470 enough?

    Hi,

I just finished building this new rig:

    CPU: E6750
    MOBO: Asus P5K-E
RAM: 2 sticks of SuperTalent DDR2-800
    GPU: evga 8800gt (stock clock)
    2 SATA HDDs & 2 DVD Burners
Misc stuff: One PCI TV Tuner, 3 * 120mm fans

I currently using the Silencer 470 to power this system and its been running fine.

The reason I am posting this is because noticed the PSU making a slight whining noise under load. I was running the Crysis demo and the noticed the noise during the initial screens that show up with all the logos and stuff before the main menu. Does it seems like something I should be worried about?

You're pushing it a little. I usually like to recommend a min 500W for an 8800GT, but I don't think it's a sign of the PSU blowing up or anything.

Thanks for the reply. I bought this PSU based on the wattage the extreme PSU calculato and minimum requirements on evga's website. The calculator said I need about 400 watts and evga recommends 22amps on 12V rail and this PSU had 470 watts and 26 amps on 12V. And it's a PC P&C.

Do u think it would last me about a 1-2 years atleast or should I get a new one with more wattage? I dont plan on doing any overclocking and this system wont be used more than 3-4 hours a day on average.

Right... but those are the MINIMUM requirements. I never said that it wouldn't be enough. I just said you were pushing it. I doubt anything is going to happen to the unit BECAUSE it's a quality unit rated to run at 40°C, but when you cut it that close you have to realize the PSU is going to work harder, run hotter and the fan is going to run faster.

I just don't understand why one would go with the bare minimum. Sorry.

Got the point. I am thinking of upgrading the PSU now to a 500watt unit since I am building this for someone else and would like it to run atleast for 1-2 yrs trouble free.

What do u think about an Antec EarthWatts 500 for this setup?

Fair choice. Obviously you're working with a budget here because a Corsair HX520 or VX550 would be a better choice. Or a plethora of sub $100 600W units on the market today would be more than adequate.
