    why do you need 4 cores...

    8** series is 1333fsb, faster clock speed, more l2 cache per cpu and, 45nm and more efficient, too.

    what's the obsession with 4 cores?

    For more impressive score in benchmarks or folding@home I guess. You do have a point (+1), E8400 will do just as well or better then a Q9300 in most common applications.

    Plus dual cores overclock better then quad cores.

    It's not an obsession.

    I guess it depends on what your needs are? It depends on whether or not the software you use can take advantage of 4 cores and how much multi-tasking you want to do. We will be seeing more games and applications making use of multiple cores in the future, I'm pretty sure of that. As for how far away is "the near future", well, I don't know! For the majority of us, there is probably no need for 4 cores right now, but seeing as a Q6600 isn't particularly expensive right now, why not have one?
