Default Need a new graphics card

About $150 perhaps a little more.

no idea what to do, don't know much about them.

Do I go for a cheapish DX10 card, I am about to try vista

And which one? ATI 2??? or nividia 8600 or less

or stick to the previous generation?

of which there is the 7600 which is in my range, a 7900XX, or say an ati x1950.

    help please

Are Nvidia now to ATI what intel is to amd? ie more ahead?

    my rig is now

    e4400 tba
gigabyte 965 ds3, arctic cooling freezer 7, with zalman paste
    superb crucial 533 ram
    samsung spinpoint HD
lite-on, now my fave, dvd drives
    and extras

First question to aks is: do you want to play games?

If you do, now is not a good time to be buying cheap video cards: the cheapest "new" card that is worth buying is the 320MB version of the 8800GTS; all of the lower-priced DirectX10 cards are absolute cr*p as far as gaming performance is concerned. If you can possibly up the budget enough to get a 320MB 8800GTS then I would exhort you to do so in the strongest possible terms.

If you can't stretch to an 8800GTS 320 then I guess an ATI X1950XT would probably be your best bet.

If you can't afford an X1950XT then you're screwed.

(Of course, if you don't want to play games then a cheap DirectX10 card would become a good buy).

That's a fine card, I'd get the eVGA KO version for around 10quid more cause you get a super long warranty :P
