Do you happen to know what failed when it died?

If it was the bridge rectifier I might be more convinced about the need for a dedicated heatsink.

I know I answered you by PM, but just so it is out there. No. I don't forensically tear them down even if they die unless the boss pays for it. If the failure mode is obvious I'll list it, but otherwise it adds time to review cycle processing which impedes throughput due to my schedule and is an additional cost on contracted rates.

Of course it can. Around a week ago you posted a datasheet that stated the rating of a bridge diode with and without a heatsink. Albeit it wasn't the right datasheet (wrong manufacturer), it showed the difference in rating.

Yes. We invest 50 additional cents to every build to implement an unnecessary heatsink for the bridge diode. It just looks prettier.
