Default Why do I have to partition a SSD drive before I format it?

I just want to format the whole drive and not have multiple partitions. They are for my backup files and folders.

Though if this is the only way to be able to format the disk I read that GPT option seems like the choice to go?

Still researching this but a quick explanation of why would be great. I thought if you are using the whole disk with no partitions it is better for an SSD?

That's a given. I mean, you can have ONE partition (which is an oxymoron, I know) but it still needs a partition.
